Two of the many patients that the Mater Foundation supports are the new Millennium twins Emily and Matthew Stark. Emily and Matthew were born on New Year’s Day in 2000 by emergency caesarean at just 29 weeks. The pair were kept alive at Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit in ventilators.

Matthew had to be revived at birth, and Emily developed a severe infection. Each early day was a miracle for the twins.

After three months in the hospital, Emily and Matthew were finally able to go home. The pair continued to battle the odds as the grew up. Matthew was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 11 months and Emily was diagnosed with respiratory health problems. But through the aid of Mater Foundation, Emily and Matthew are now living well at 16. Today, Emily is an accomplished dancer and cheerleader, while Matthew is a swimmer, currently in training for Paralympic glory.
